Mundane Object: CELL PHONE

A mundane object that I feel has influenced my thought process through logos, ethos, or pathos is the cell phone. For one, I find the cell phone a mundane object because it is extremely common and it is not unusual to see nearly everyone with their cell phones 24/7. I believe that cells phones have influenced our world tremendously they have taken over writing in the simplest text. How many people sit down and write handwritten notes? Not many. How many 7thgraders are pros at texting? I’m sure the number is extremely high. Cell phones have changed the world we know with instant gratification. People can now know 24/7 current sports scores, check their e-mail, stocks, the weather, and are always in contact with whoever they need to reach. The cell phone has effective my ethos because of character. When I see teenager texting under the dinner table I do not only look down on the character of the kid but the parents as well. When people have trouble putting their cell phones down for 2 minutes there is a problem. I believe many peoples character has dropped because of cell phones. This summer I backpacked through Europe and did not have a cell phone, and it was wonderful! I hate the feeling of being connected to the world 24/7. I do not only see cell phones affecting character but the ethos, and logos also. Bottom line cell phones effect people’s character levels.

  1. girl, I completely agree with you on this one!! I hate my cell phone and wish that people would stop calling, texting, and leaving me voicemails!! My sister is 17 and she CAN NOT live without her phone, she is constantly texting and she will talk on her cell phone instead of the land line when she is @ home. It is ridiculous to be that tied up with an object smaller than a remote control.

  2. My God, I'd like to backpack through Europe, too. Except I'm sure to sleep beside a bunch of smelly backpackers in hostels must be unpleasant!

  3. I thought about the mundane object thing for a while and finally decided to go with the other blog prompt, but you picked a good one. Cell phones are just these little, inconspicuous pieces of plastic, but they have become so important to our everyday lives. I remember when I was in 8th grade and my parents got a cell phone. My dad wanted my mom to have it when she was away from home and I would take it when I went out with friends. The first night I took it out, to a football game, my mom called me about 30 times and I was like, "I never want to have one of these all the time. I like being somewhat unreachable." Of course I have one now, but it would be nice to just be completely unreachable. I think people worry more these days as well. You call your friend three times with no answer and suddenly they must be dead. Nice blog!

  4. I agree that cell phones have become way too engrained in the daily lives of most people. The world would be a drastically different place if cell phones did not exist, this is for sure. Not being connected to the whole world all of the time is a possitive thing, but being able to reach someone any time if you need help is also good. I do agree that there are too many people who use cell phones way too much, but there are some good things about them as well.

  5. Timely topic. We've gone from a world of no cell phones to everyone having cell phones in less than a decade. Anything that creates that much change needs to be analyzed and understood. I look forward to reading your final essay.
