Just a thought..

I have been thinking about the discussion we had in class dealing with Print and Web and I found it so interesting. Right after we had the class my father sent me an e-mail that I believe has something to do with our class because it is you tube video that talks about how the internet and technology has completely changed our world and before we had all the technology and gadgets we have today, we were different people. I like the part of the class dealing with the two different segments of internet, the 1.0 and the 2.0. People don’t seem to read books anymore, well I do because I love books, probably why I am an English Major. But for the most part, the library seems to be a waste, except for the computers and even then people are always sitting around waiting for a computer to get on. I have found that by the time people get things published in books, there is already a new publisher with “new information” our world is changing so fast that we can barely keep up, and thanks to the internet we can in a sense. All of the sites that the young middle school kids get on to dish out the world their hearts and soul of the new crisis in their life can be good. This allows kids to get comfortable with writing, and writing about their feelings and ideas, and little way of publishing their work. The sites such as wikipedia were people can go and change things I believe is so interesting. Like I said in class where they way I found places to stay the night when I was in Europe was from the internet and a site that is a 2.0 because other travelers who had stayed at these hostels wrote references and reviews such as, “I was so scared I couldn’t even close my eyes” or “rats in the showers” or “best place, great people, internet access and cheap” we relied on what other people wrote and stayed their based on not experts, but yet what other people our age told us. I think this whole 2.0 is so neat and I find it quite interesting.

  1. I was just saying to my professor the other day that I did not know how I was able to get through high school without the internet. I graduated so long ago, way before there was a computer in just about every house in America. We actually had to research in libraries - actual BOOKS if you can believe that! ha ha... but really, what would these students of today do without this information at their fingertips? Its just amazing to me, concerning your comment about the library, how little Tech students use the library for research. They (well, myself included sometimes) are so quick to jump online and look for online journals that the books are probably doing nothing more than collecting dust. And another thing, the ones that are on the computers... so many of them as you walk by are on Facebook, Myspace or playing some sort of internet game! Has anyone else noticed this?

  2. I also think that people, myself included, are sometimes too reliant on technology. Technology has proven itself to be fun, interesting, and helpful, but I think technology has also done some harm to our society. People are able to hide behind electronic devices so that they don’t have to interact with one another or so they can avoid awkward situations. I think it’s important to remember that moderation is important, and people are always more interesting when you can interact with them in person!

  3. I really like the point you made about how internet blogging that teenagers seem to be unable to live without these days, such as myspace or facebook, can actually have a positive side. Sometimes internet blogging sites are looked down upon as having a negative effect on kids today but I agree that it gives them a way to write how they are feeling and whether or not it is grammatically correct, or whether it will ever even be read by anyone but them, it is a step in the right direction for writing.

  4. We live in a fast food society. We want immediate results. It's great that we can get current info online. Reference books will soon be a think of the past. Books are a great place for history or a great story, but the books I buy for MCOM classes are basically obsolete by the time I get to page 2.

  5. that video was crazy!! It is unbelievable how fast things are going. I feel that sometimes technology is changing so fast that I have become numb to the awe of invention. I mean, come on, you can watch TV on your phone, surf the web, download a book....and when we hear about it, we don't really even react. Soon our freaking phone is going to be our garage door opener, the tv remote, etc.
